Two day old piglets were inoculated intravenously with 1 ml of swine vesicular disease virus UK-G 27-72 isolate. Using infectivity tests, immunofluorescent staining and gross and histopathological examination, pathogenesis of the infection was studied in tissue specimens collected daily from one through seven days postinoculation. Swine vesicular disease virus had a strong affinity for the epithelia of the tongue, snout, coronary band and lips, the myocardium and the lymphoid elements of the tonsil and the brain stem. The virus had the greatest affinity for the epithelium of the tongue. However, there was no evidence that the tongue was the initial replication site for swine vesicular disease virus. Prickle cells in the stratum spinosum appear to be the primary targets for the virus. The necrotic foci in the stratum spinosum appeared first, followed the next day by reticular degeneration and multilocular intraepidermal vesicular formation. In the digestive tract and most of the other visceral organs the short duration and sudden drop of the virus titres and the negative fluorescence and pathological findings suggest that these are not important sites for the replication of swine vesicular disease virus in this experiment. The virus was recovered from most of the central nervous tissue specimens. Although the piglets had significant central nervous system lesions, signs of impaired central nervous system function were not detected. Methidathion applied to cattle as a pour-on insecticide for control of lice (predominantly Linognathus vituli, but also Haematopinus eurysternus and Damalinia bovis) caused a reduction in the lice population of approximately 98% to 99% in laboratory trials at the minimum recommended dose of 4 mg/kg and a 98.8% to 100% efficiency was achieved in field trials. In a comparative efficiency trial in the laboratory methidathion at 3.5 to 5 mg/kg reduced the lice population by 98.8% to 99%, fenthion by 98.5% at 4.5 mg/kg and famphur by 99.7% at 16.5 mg/kg. Methidathion was tolerated by calves aged 15 to 20 weeks at dose rates up to 40 mg/kg indicating an approximate 7 fold safety margin, but 1 of 4 calves treated at 50 mg/kg died following treatment. Treatment with fenthion at 50 mg/kg, 7.4 times the average recommended rate, famphur at 75 mg/kg, 3 times the average rate and chlorpyrifos at 85 mg/kg, 5 times average rate, caused reductions in whole blood cholinesterase activity of 52%, 27% and 47% respectively which were similar to the reductions in cholinesterase activity found in calves treated with methidathion at similar levels above the recommended commercial dose rates. It was found that 2 day old calves were more sensitive to treatment with methidathion than calves 9 or 16 days old. A further 11,900 cattle of varying age, breed and sex were treated with methidathion under field conditions at the recommended rate of 4 to 8 mg/kg, and 534 cattle were treated at 24 mg/kg without any signs of toxicity. 相似文献
Coxsackievirus B5 (CB5) was serially passaged five times in pigs in an attempt to establish clinical disease. No clinical signs were seen although some pigs had a transient rise in rectal temperature. Viremia was not detected although virus was isolated from nasal swabs and fecal samples. No CB5 specific fluorescence or virus was detected in any tissues of five passages by immunofluorescent test and tissue culture methods, respectively.
Brain lesions were noted in all passages; extensiveness of lesions increased slightly up to the third passage although no evidence of increasing viral replication was found. No increase in brain lesions was found in the fourth and fifth passages. The development and progress of brain lesions were similar to but less extensive than those caused by swine vesicular disease virus (SVDV) in most pigs examined. Contact pigs also showed more brain lesions than inoculated pigs. In some passages, microscopic changes also were found in the heart. All pigs exposed to CB5 had positive neutralizing antibody titres against CB5 and SVDV but became ill after challenge with SVDV. The damage caused to egg shells by various cracking and crushing methods was examined in two ways. Externally visible damage was photographed, while internal damage was studied in thin sections of shell prepared after embedding in plastic.
With the flat plate, flat‐ended peg and round‐ended peg the shell may crack cleanly over some distance or crack and crumble outwards from the first point of damage. The needle pierces the outer layers of shell and pushes out a cone from the inside of the shell. A falling ball produces clean cracks or damage rather similar to the flat‐ended Peg.
When the treatment is stopped before visible damage occurs there is usually a considerable amount of internal damage of a kind which could lead ultimately to the type of damage actually observed. The first sign of change appears to be the formation of twinning planes in the individual calcite crystals. Later the large crystals may break up into small units. 相似文献
Spontaneously occurring anterior corneal opacities were present in related, juvenile American Dutch belted rabbits. Slit lamp biomicroscopy revealed focal opacities of epithelium, basement membrane, and subepithelial corneal stroma. Lesions were characterized histologically by thin and disorganized surface epithelium, thickened and intensely staining epithelial basement membrane, fimbriated and irregular basement membrane-stromal juncture, and disorganized subepithelial stroma. Biomicroscopic and histopathologic features of anterior corneal dystrophy of American Dutch belted rabbits appear similar to those of human anterior corneal dystrophies. 相似文献
Six experimental stocks were evaluated in two trials at seven locations to determine if genetically diverse meat‐type stocks would be useful in identifying specific causes of genotype‐environment interactions.
Stock differences in body weights (at 1, 5 and 8 weeks) were significant and responsible for 55 to 80% of the total phenotypic variation. Location effects were also significant, while trial effects were significant only at 1 and 5 weeks of age. Stock‐location interactions were significant (P < 0.01) for body weight at 1 and 5 weeks of age in both sexes while male 8‐week body weight and shank length differences were also significant (P< 0.05). The importance of stock‐location interactions for juvenile body weight decreased with age, being reponsible for 3% of the total phenotypic variation at 1 week and less than 1 % at 8 weeks of age.
These data support previous reports indicating stock‐location interactions are of minor importance for juvenile body weights in broiler stocks and responsible for less than 2% of the total phenotypic variation in 8‐week body weight. Utilisation of genetically diverse stocks did not materially increase the importance of or aid in identifying these interactions. 相似文献
The results of 5484 submissions from cats to the Canadian Veterinary Urolith Centre between February 1998 and February 2003 are presented. Of the submissions, 618 were urethral plugs and 4866 were bladder uroliths. The majority of the urethral plugs were from male domestic shorthair and longhair cats. Approximately 50% of the urolith submissions were oxalate, 44% were struvite. Oxalate uroliths were the most common mineral type in males and in Himalayan, Persian, and Siamese cats. Struvite uroliths were the most common mineral type in domestic shorthair and longhair cats. Females outnumbered males by 1.4:1 in struvite urolith submissions. A review of risk factors for urethral plugs and bladder uroliths is presented. 相似文献
A postal survey of the techniques being used for the treatment and control of footrot in sheep flocks between November 1999 and October 2000 was conducted in England and Wales in November 2000. Of the 392 questionnaires circulated, 251 (64 per cent) were returned, and 209 of these were usable. Negative binomial regression analysis indicated that the isolation of bought-in sheep, and the separation and individual treatment of diseased sheep with parenteral antibiotics, foot trimming and topical foot sprays were associated with a significantly lower prevalence of footrot in a flock. In contrast, ewe flocks which were routinely foot trimmed more than once a year had a significantly higher prevalence of footrot. No evidence was found that footbathing a flock reduced the level of footrot, except on the 14 per cent of farms where the penning and race facilities for footbathing were reported by the farmer to be excellent.
